no., 10, 11 and 12. In 1960, from the outside, the TR60 is recognizable with the new 25 cm high windshield responding to the new regulations of the International Sports Commission. This windshield is aerodynamic nonsense and a hindrance to drivers. The Scuderia would have underestimated the impact of the new windshield height on fuel consumption. The bodywork of the Testa Rossa from 1959 is designed by Pininfarina and built by the Fantuzzi Carrozzeria. The steering wheel passes to the right and the carburettor bump is replaced by a Plexiglas bubble. The Nart of Luigi Chinetti has engaged for Pedro Rodriguez and André Pilette a 1959 TR59 car number 17 with an enhanced windshield but the exhaust pipes are long and lead to the rear. On #17, the scoop is replaced by the same grid as on the left side. The tank cap is on the rear cover. The outline of the headlights in yellow, the highlighting of the grille by 2 yellow bands and the rectangular Ferrari stickers differentiate it from the official cars. The mosquito screen in Plexiglas in front of the windshield is fixed with 2 aluminium supports. The mirror is rectangular. Compared to the other 3 numbers, on Car #9 the driver’s side front air intake is not shrouded (scoop) and the front grille is higher. As in #11, the tank cap is very high on the driver’s headrest dent and the left air intake on the front cover is smaller than the right one. The mirror is round and flat. Gregory Masten’s Maserati tipo 61 #24 is leading the way. At the peak, it will reach 273 km/h and achieve the best lap on the track in 4’04’0. However, the poorly insulated Maserati’s electrical circuits cannot withstand the dampness caused by the thunderstorms that pour the track and forced the Maserati team #26 to re??re within the first hour of the race. After an hour racing and 22 laps, Van Trips on No. 9 ran out of fuel just before the end of his first relay. From the edge of the track, he tries to warn the drivers of the other 3 official TR60 of overconsumption. If the Frère-Gendebien team narrowly escaped, the team of car number 12 Scarfiotti – Rodriguez could not join their pit and also gave up. At night, the Jaguar Type D, which foreshadows the future Type E, of Ron Flockhart and Bruce Halford, gives up on an engine failure. Mayor and Ginther’s Car # 10 is long in 2nd position and must hold off the remaining Aston Martin DBR1. But the gearbox dropped around 8 am on Sunday and the team gave up its third place to Roy Salvadori and Jim Clark’s Aston Martin DBR-1 #7.

Relegated to 4 points behind Porsche, Ferrari must win at Le Mans if it wants to win the 1960 Manufacturers’ World Championship. But a victory of Maserati tipo 61, an Aston Martin DBR-1 or even the new Jaguar type E are all threats for the Scuderia. It therefore decided to deploy all its forces by hiring 4 new cars:
